Asbestos is a fibrous mineral found naturally in rock formations around the world. Asbestos fibres are strong, durable and non-combustible and were widely used by industry, mainly in construction.
How much asbestos is in a product does not indicate its health risk. If asbestos fibres are enclosed or tightly bound in a compound, for example in asbestos siding or asbestos floor tiles, there is no significant health risk. Asbestos poses health risks only when fibres are present in the air that people breathe.
Asbestos fibres can be an extremely serious health risk and should only be dealt with by professionals specifically trained in asbestos abatement removal.
For the purpose of regulation and control, asbestos-containing material (ACM) are divided into two categories, friable and non-friable. The difference between these two categories is how easily the material can be broken down to release airborne fibres.
FRIABLE: Materials that when dry CAN be broken down
NON-FRIABLE: Materials that when dry CANNOT easily be broken down
The most common asbestos containing materials are heating pipe wrap, vinyl floor tile, textured ceilings, roof shingles, and insulation.  There is concern about vermiculite insulation which may contain small amounts of asbestos.  These fibres may cause health risks if disturbed.
There are specific guidelines set for removal specialists to follow in order to ensure the asbestos problems are dealt with as swiftly and as safely as possible. Air quality testing, at the end of the project, is required before occupancy can be resumed.
