WHAT IS MOULD?

Mould is a Fungus that grows on food or damp building materials.  In order to reproduce, moulds release small “spores” into the air and these spores are small enough that people can actually breathe them in.  Mould can appear in a variety of colours (white, brown, yellow, gray, black, and green) and in a variety of textures (fuzzy, stained, discoloured, and cottony). There is mould that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation.  When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mould growth will often occur.

Few environmental problems have received as much attention in the last few years as mould contamination in buildings. Virtually any water affected building surface can support mould growth.  Although moulds are naturally occurring, it is well established that the growth of mould in buildings can cause a variety of health problems ranging from headache and flu-like symptoms to serious and possibly permanent health impairment. For these reasons, current standards recommend that all mould growth be considered potentially harmful to health, and abated, without regard to the types of mould present.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO REMEDY A MOULD PROBLEM?

Small areas of fungal growth can be removed by the homeowner or a maintenance worker; however, the underlying problem must be fixed, or else the mould could reappear.

Note: Authorities advise specialized help for the clean-up of more than a few square feet of mould growth.  Special containment, ventilation and safety measures may be required for larger scales of work. Saskatoon Fire and Flood has certified, specifically trained technicians ready to investigate, abate, and remediate your mould issues.  A variety of mould cleanup methods are available for remediating damage; the specific method or group of methods used will depend on the type of materials affected.
